Punjab imposes Section 144 amid security threats
The Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province from October 6 to October 15 to maintain law and order. The restriction prohibits gatherings, processions, or assemblies of five or more people in public places, open spaces, or on highways.
Under the new regulations, carrying or displaying weapons in public is strictly forbidden, as is inciting or encouraging participation in illegal gatherings. The decision follows intelligence reports suggesting that terrorist organizations may target public assemblies, rallies, and protests, making them potential targets for attacks.
Certain activities are exempt from these restrictions, including wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, and activities within mosques or other places of worship. Additionally, events held in courts, government institutions, or those conducted with official permission are exempt. Law enforcement agencies, intelligence services, and security personnel on duty are also not subject to these restrictions.
