Punjab intensifies road safety crackdown on illegal lighting and motorcycle violations
The Punjab government has launched a crackdown on illegal vehicle lighting to improve road safety. Deputy Inspector General Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir directed officials to strictly enforce bans on prohibited flasher and HID lights, which cause visibility issues for oncoming drivers. To date, more than 17,000 challans have been issued across the province this year, with Lahore alone accounting for over 5,000 fines.
In addition to lighting enforcement, authorities are proposing stricter regulations for motorcyclists. A proposal submitted by the Lahore Traffic Police seeks to fine riders who operate motorcycles without side-view mirrors or functional indicators. To prevent riders from removing essential equipment, officials have recommended that manufacturers install side-view mirrors permanently on new motorcycles. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to reduce accidents through legal amendments, enforcement, and public awareness campaigns.
