Punjab launches body-worn cameras for police in Lahore

The Punjab government has launched a body-worn camera initiative for police personnel, starting in Lahore before expanding across the province. Directed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the project aims to modernize law enforcement, improve public safety, and curb corruption by strengthening accountability.

The cameras will be used by various units, including the Punjab Police, Punjab Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force, and traffic police. The devices are integrated with Smart Safe City systems operating in 43 cities, allowing district control rooms to monitor field operations in real time.

Technical features of the cameras include facial recognition, automatic number plate reading, threat alerts, audio and video recording, and photography. They also include calling functionality and an SOS button for emergencies. To ensure a secure chain of custody, officers must return the devices to designated docking stations at the end of their shifts, where data is automatically transferred to secure storage.
