Punjab lawmaker urges extension of Assembly session to debate six Bills

Congress lawmaker Sukhpal Singh Khaira has called on the Punjab government and Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan to extend the Assembly session. The request follows the scheduling of six significant Bills for consideration on the final working day of the session.

The proposed legislation includes three Digital University Bills, matters regarding Goods and Services Tax (GST), outsourced personnel and contractual engagement, and common infrastructure. Khaira argued that rushing these laws through without adequate time for scrutiny and stakeholder consultation undermines parliamentary democracy.

Khaira stated, “The Vidhan Sabha is not a rubber stamp for the Cabinet,” emphasizing that the laws will have long-lasting implications for Punjab's economy, institutions, and citizens. He urged the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to allow for a meaningful debate to ensure the legislation serves the public interest.
