Puno Port Captain urges Los Uros to acquire water pumps
Erick Gutiérrez Ocampo, the Lacustrine Port Captain of Puno for the Peruvian Navy, has called on the authorities of Los Uros to purchase motor pumps to manage emergencies. This request follows recent fires on Lake Titicaca that damaged several tourist accommodations.
During the recent incidents, the Captaincy utilized a lacustrine patrol boat and naval personnel to control the flames. While the naval system can launch water up to 30 or 50 meters toward land using the lake as a constant supply, local equipment is needed for future prevention.
A second fire recently broke out in the Huerta Huaraya sector, spreading rapidly due to strong winds. The blaze damaged grasslands and four tourist lodgings, posing a significant threat to the floating islands and potentially risking human lives. The Captaincy is currently coordinating with relevant authorities to develop a fire fighting plan.
