Peru faces severe forest fire emergency across multiple regions

Peru is facing a severe emergency due to widespread forest fires across multiple regions, including Cusco, Puno, Apurímac, Junín, Ayacucho, and others. Authorities report dozens of active fires and thousands of heat spots. The National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (Senamhi) has placed nine regions under red alert due to atmospheric conditions such as low humidity, high temperatures, and strong winds, which are being exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon.

The fires have resulted in significant human and environmental costs, including at least six reported deaths and extensive damage to crops, pastures, and native forests. In response, the government has deployed personnel, helicopters, and aircraft to combat the flames in difficult terrain. The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation is also working to distribute seeds and animal feed to help communities recover from the loss of grazing lands.
