Puno residents protest unregulated urban transport fare hikes
Residents and community organizations in Puno are protesting unregulated increases in urban transport fares. The Frente de Organizaciones Populares (FOP) has criticized the lack of intervention from the Municipalidad Provincial de Puno and Indecopi, noting that drivers are charging between 1.50 and 2 soles per trip despite prohibitions against price-fixing.
Local leaders, including Roberto Cutimbo Mena of the Ciudad Humanidad Totorani neighborhood, have expressed concern over potential fare hikes of up to 50 percent. Community members are also raising issues regarding the charging of full fares to minors. In response, the FOP plans to organize a meeting with social organizations, neighborhood presidents, and transport representatives to address the situation and demand regulatory action.
