South American regions brace for extreme weather and El Niño
Multiple regions in South America are preparing for extreme weather events. In Argentina, international agencies warn that the El Niño phenomenon could be the most intense in 76 years, potentially causing severe flooding and river rises through 2027. The national government has activated emergency protocols to manage these risks.
In Peru, authorities are addressing various climate threats, including heavy rainfall and the El Niño phenomenon in Tumbes, as well as water scarcity and forest fire risks in Puno. Additionally, Senamhi predicts above-normal temperatures for Ica, Huancavelica, and Ayacucho during the spring.
In Chile, the Coquimbo Region is facing unseasonably high temperatures, with some interior valleys expected to reach 34°C, raising concerns about rapid snowmelt and river surges. Meanwhile, in the Maule Region, local authorities are distributing forest fire prevention and mitigation plans to municipalities to prepare for the upcoming summer season.
