Puno writer calls for better cultural policies and folklore preservation

Writer Omar Aramayo has criticized politicians and candidates in Puno for their lack of concrete proposals to strengthen the region's cultural and artistic sectors. He noted that current political figures often lack an understanding of the local cultural reality and fail to prioritize it in their public agendas.

Aramayo proposed the establishment of a regional cultural policy, specifically suggesting the creation of a ‘Casa del Folclore’ (House of Folklore) or a large Folklore Museum. Such a space would serve to preserve and disseminate the work of regional artisans and artists, including mask makers, embroiderers, weavers, ceramists, painters, and photographers, who currently lack a central institution to document the region's cultural history.

In a related effort to revalue local traditions, the ‘Kusillos’ exhibition was recently inaugurated, featuring painting, photography, and literary texts focused on the traditional character. The exhibition included works by artists such as Uriel Alex Montúfar and Max Castillo, alongside texts by Aramayo and José María Arguedas.
