Punta Arenas and Chiloé mayors seek direct air route
The mayors of Punta Arenas and Castro are coordinating efforts to restore a direct commercial air route between the Magallanes region and Chiloé Island. The proposal aims to establish non-stop flights between Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport and the Mocopulli airfield in Dalcahue.
If implemented, the direct route would reduce travel time to approximately two hours, bypassing the current requirement for passengers to transit through El Tepual Airport in Puerto Montt. Local leaders emphasize that the connection is vital due to the deep historical and familial ties between the Chiloé province and the southern Magallanes territory.
To advance the project, authorities plan to formally present the initiative to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and engage with regional governors from both Magallanes and Los Lagos. Additionally, a request has been sent to the Ministry of Transport to facilitate the reactivation of the route.
