Latin American courts issue major rulings on political and criminal cases

In Argentina, a second-instance court confirmed a conviction against the Pueblo Esther Commune regarding the 2011 death of a 17-year-old at a communal campsite. The ruling establishes a leading case, emphasizing the obligation of public establishments to implement effective safety, surveillance, and prevention measures to protect visitors.

In Peru, the Constitutional Court (TC) unanimously rejected habeas corpus petitions from former president Pedro Castillo and former Interior Minister Willy Huerta. The court ruled that their requests to annul sentences related to the 2022 attempted coup were inadmissible, as their legal status is already defined by formal convictions. The defense may still pursue appeals through the Supreme Court's Permanent Criminal Chamber.

Additionally, the TC ruled in favor of Alan Azizollahoff in the Utopía nightclub case, declaring his four-year prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter has expired. Consequently, the court ordered the lifting of all national and international arrest warrants against him, restoring his freedom of movement.

In Ecuador, the Electoral Contentious Tribunal (TCE) archived a case seeking to initiate a revocation process against President Daniel Noboa. The tribunal rejected an appeal by promoters of the initiative, following a decision by the National Electoral Council to deny the necessary forms for signature collection.
