Punta Arenas seeks to reopen historic Gabriela Mistral Kindergarten

The Magallanes Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Education and the Teachers' Association of Magallanes have begun discussions to reopen the historic Gabriela Mistral Kindergarten in Punta Arenas. Founded in 1979, the facility previously served approximately 500 children from nursery through kindergarten.

The project aims to recover the heritage site and expand early childhood education options in the city center, specifically benefiting families working in the local commerce and service sectors. José Raúl Alvarado, the Regional Ministerial Secretary of Education, noted that the initiative seeks to revitalize the downtown area while restoring a significant educational landmark.

Proposed timelines suggest that renovation work could begin this year and continue through 2027, with a target reopening date in 2028. The plan also includes provisions for special benefits for the children and grandchildren of registered teachers.
