Punta Cana tourism boom pushes airport toward 800 weekly international flights and spurs new road and planning projects

The Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is scheduled to handle 794 international flights between 20 – 26 July 2026, just seven flights short of the 800‑flight weekly benchmark. The surge reflects a peak summer tourism season, with hotel occupancy averaging over 80 % and strong passenger demand from North America, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. The airport is also undergoing partial upgrades to its check‑in facilities.

At the same time, extensive public‑private investment is reshaping the broader region. New road works near the Coral Highway toll are improving links between the airport, Punta Cana, Bávaro, Verón and other tourist hubs, reducing travel times and easing congestion. Urban‑planning initiatives aim to guide orderly growth in Verón‑Punta Cana, supporting residential, commercial and tourism projects while protecting environmental assets. Both the flight‑volume increase and the infrastructure upgrades underscore Punta Cana’s role as the Dominican Republic’s premier tourist gateway.
