Punta del Este lawmakers propose designated zones for street prostitution
Three legislators from Uruguay's Maldonado Department have introduced a proposal to create specific zones for street prostitution in Punta del Este. The plan would task the Intendencia de Maldonado with defining authorized areas, keeping sex work away from residential neighborhoods, families, children and recreational spaces. It targets the El Placer sector, located between Punta del Este and La Barra, where residents have complained about increasing public visibility of sex work.
Supporters say the measure balances workers' rights with community coexistence, while critics and sex‑workers’ rights groups call for broader safety and human‑rights considerations. The proposal will be examined by departmental authorities before any implementation decision is made.
