Buenos Aires police station riot ends with hostage release

A riot at the Alcaidía 1 detention center in Buenos Aires concluded with the release of a police officer who had been held hostage for over five hours. The incident began at the Lavalle street facility following a violent altercation between inmates. When officers intervened to separate the fighting detainees, a group of approximately ten prisoners took a sub-commissioner, an inspector, and a senior officer hostage.

During the standoff, detainees used a stolen mobile phone to film themselves and broadcast demands, which included the presence of a prosecutor and improved living conditions. Authorities reported that the inmates also used the officer's phone to access and empty his bank accounts.

Following the resolution of the crisis, the City's Minister of Security, Horacio Giménez, announced that the facility would be temporarily closed and all 31 detainees would be transferred to other locations. The involved prisoners face additional charges, including robbery, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and threats, which are expected to aggravate their existing sentences.
