Somalia President calls for UN reform amid domestic election dispute
Addressing the UN General Assembly, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called for significant reforms to the UN Security Council, describing Africa's lack of permanent representation as a ‘historical injustice’. He advocated for a more transparent and effective Council that better reflects the interests of the 54 African nations. Mohamud also emphasized that while Somalia welcomes international support for its transition to a multi-party democracy and universal suffrage, the country must maintain ownership of its own democratic processes.
Simultaneously, Somalia faces a deepening domestic political crisis. The Somali Future Council, a coalition of opposition leaders and regional presidents from Puntland and Jubaland, has formally requested UN Security Council intervention to mediate disputes over constitutional mandates and the electoral process. The opposition argues that President Mohamud’s mandate expired in May 2026, whereas the federal government maintains that 2024 constitutional amendments extending terms to five years are legally binding.
