Puntland President Deni visits Mudug amid territorial disputes
Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni has conducted a two-week tour of eastern Mudug, including visits to Towfiiq and the coastal settlement of Dhinowda. Deni described the mission as an effort to promote peace and reconciliation between the Sheekhaal and Surre clans, and to assess humanitarian needs such as the impact of encroaching sand on local settlements.
In response to the tour, federal government ministers and Galmudug State officials have expressed concern, arguing that Dhinowda is part of Galmudug territory. They warned that Deni’s unilateral visit without the consent of the Galmudug administration could inflame political and security tensions in the disputed region. Officials urged that border and administrative disputes be resolved through dialogue and legal means rather than unilateral actions.
Deni has announced plans to host a peace conference, or ‘gogol nabadeed’, in the Puntland capital of Garowe to strengthen social cohesion and coexistence between the local communities.
