Puntledge River rescue saves two women in Courtenay
Two women were rescued from the Puntledge River in Courtenay on August 18 after being reported as swimmers in distress. The pair had become separated from their flotation device and were moving downstream.
First responders, including firefighters equipped with throw-bags, positioned themselves along the river from the Fifth Street Bridge to the Condensory Bridge to assist. Bystanders eventually helped bring the women to the firefighters. Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Welsh noted that the individuals were under the influence at the time of the incident but were rescued without harm.
Welsh warned the public that fluctuating river conditions, including low water levels, can create dangerous snag points and entanglements. He advised river users to use personal flotation devices and to avoid alcohol while on the water.
