Pupuk Kaltim presents 2.23‑hectare coral reef restoration at ICRS 2026
PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (Pupuk Kaltim), a subsidiary of PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero), represented Indonesia as the sole national industry at the 16th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) 2026 in Auckland, New Zealand. The company presented two scientific works – an oral presentation titled “Quindecennial Consecutively Collaborative Coral Restoration” and a poster titled “Integration Coral Restoration through Long‑Term Stakeholder Engagement and its Independence Governance”.
Pupuk Kaltim highlighted its 15‑year coral‑reef restoration programme in Tebok Batang, Bontang, East Kalimantan, launched in 2011 after more than 50 % of the local reefs were damaged by unsustainable fishing. The programme uses three types of artificial reef modules – Pyramid, Cube and Dome – and involves local coastal communities in construction, transplantation and ongoing ecological monitoring. By 2025 the effort had rehabilitated 2.23 hectares of reef out of a permitted 10‑hectare area, recording 57 fish families and 69 coral genera. Company representatives Anggono Wijaya and Astri Agustina emphasized the project’s alignment with ESG principles and Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water).
