Increased activity at Colombia's Puracé volcano forces airport shutdown

The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported a significant rise in seismic energy and ash emissions from the Puracé volcano in the Cauca department. Ash plumes reached heights of 2,100‑2,200 m, with elevated SO₂ and CO₂ levels and higher thermal readings than the 2025 episode. The volcano remains on a yellow alert, and officials warned that further emissions could occur.

Ash fallout prompted the civil aviation authority to suspend operations at Popayán’s Guillermo León Valencia airport and impose temporary air‑space restrictions, affecting several regional routes. Authorities also halted classes in Coconuco and Puracé, advised residents to wear masks, avoid the high‑altitude chain, and follow instructions from the National Risk Management Unit. The heightened activity coincides with preparations for the inauguration of president‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella, raising concerns about logistics for the ceremony.
