Purdue football pauses Notre Dame rivalry for 2027 West Virginia game
Purdue University has announced a pause in its long-standing football rivalry with Notre Dame. The Boilermakers will replace a scheduled 2027 road game in South Bend with a matchup against West Virginia.
West Virginia Director of Athletics Wren Baker confirmed the addition of Purdue to the Mountaineers' 2027 home schedule in Morgantown. This addition provides West Virginia with 10 Power 4 games, meeting the requirements for the expanded 24-team College Football Playoff.
Purdue Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tommy McClelland stated that the rivalry, which has been played over 90 times, will be reevaluated for potential inclusion in future schedules. Notre Dame has since added a home-and-home series with Illinois, leaving Purdue with an open non-conference date for 2028.
