Puri beach declared red zone as deep depression triggers heavy rain in Odisha
The Puri district administration in Odisha has declared its beaches a ‘red zone’ and implemented a strict ban on sea bathing due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. The weather system, which crossed the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam, has triggered heavy rainfall and extremely turbulent sea conditions.
To ensure public safety, authorities have hoisted red flags along the coast and deployed 98 lifeguards from the Odisha Fire Service. These personnel are using ATVs, megaphones, and loudspeakers to warn tourists, pilgrims, and local residents against entering the water. The administration has also cancelled the leave of all government officers and employees to maintain emergency readiness.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha, with very heavy rain expected to continue through the coming days. While fishermen have safely returned to the coast, the Fisheries Department has advised them to secure their equipment and remain cautious until conditions improve.
