Puri Jagannath Temple to introduce queue-based darshan system
The Odisha government plans to implement a structured queue-based darshan system at the Srimandir in Puri to improve crowd management and devotee safety. Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that a pilot model has been prepared to streamline the process.
Under the proposed layout, devotees will enter through the Satapahacha gate, ascend a specially constructed ramp in the Natamandap, and exit through the Ghanti Dwara or other designated gates. To ensure inclusivity, dedicated queues will be established for women, children, senior citizens, and differently-abled individuals.
The implementation will follow consultations with various servitor groups, including the Pratihari Nijog, and requires approval from the temple management committee. While some groups suggested using rope or physical barricades, the Law Minister noted that such measures might be insufficient during periods of heavy footfall, favoring the more structured ramp and queue model.
