Purple jellyfish sightings reported across Greek waters

Purple jellyfish, scientifically known as Pelagia noctiluca, are appearing in Greek waters, causing concern for tourists and swimmers. Frequent sightings have been reported in areas such as Euboea and Phthiotis, including Chalkida, Arkitsa, and Drosia, as well as parts of the Pagasetic Gulf.

Real-time data from the iNaturalist application and social media groups like ‘Meduses in Greece’ show sightings across various coasts of the country. These jellyfish are characterized by their pink, purple, or lilac hues, a thick bell shape with small spots, four long oral arms, and eight thin peripheral tentacles.

While these jellyfish are common in tropical and warm temperate seas, their presence in the Mediterranean can cause intense pain and irritation upon stinging. Experts advise against touching them, even if they are found out of the water.
