Putin and Xi Sign Cooperation Deals in Beijing as Trump Ends US Visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing and signed an extension of the China‑Russia Treaty on Good‑Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation, along with agreements on digital infrastructure, rail links, the Heihe‑Blagoveshchensk cable‑car project and visa‑free travel for Russians until 2027. The two leaders issued a joint declaration promoting a “multipolar world” and principles such as inclusive cooperation, equal security and diversified civilisations.

U.S. President Donald Trump also held a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the same trip. The meeting produced limited outcomes, chiefly discussions about future Boeing purchases and a possible reduction in tariffs, while no substantive progress was made on larger geopolitical issues such as Iran or the Strait of Hormuz. Experts noted the lack of impact, with Eurasia Group’s Amanda Hsiao stating that “despite all the ceremony and summit theatrics … this summit will not be that significant.”
