Vladimir Putin warns of global conflict risks and defends Russian sovereignty

During the 23rd annual Valdai Discussion Club and the opening of the new State Duma, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed global security, the economy, and international relations. Putin warned that the probability of continued international conflicts in the near future is high, driven by fundamental global shifts and increased risk-taking by major powers. He argued that the world is transitioning from a unipolar system to a multipolar order and called for reforms to the United Nations to better reflect global diversity.

On security, Putin warned against the use of weapons of mass destruction, stating that escalating retaliatory measures could lead to a ‘fatal point of no return.’ He reiterated that while Russia does not intend to attack European countries, it is prepared to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory, specifically mentioning the Kaliningrad region.

Regarding the domestic economy, Putin asserted that Russia’s financial system remains stable and that the country does not need to seek economic assistance from abroad. He emphasized the need for a balanced and realistic three-year state budget and urged lawmakers to prioritize defense capabilities and support for military families. Additionally, he cautioned against the risks of ‘digital totalitarianism’ arising from the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
