Putin convenes Russian Security Council to discuss Arctic strategy

Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a meeting of the Russian Security Council to establish a strategy for the Arctic region. The session focused on two primary areas: the general development of the Arctic zone and measures to ensure national security in the far north.

The meeting included high-ranking officials such as Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, and the heads of the FSB and SVR. The discussions addressed both military-political matters and specific development strategies for the region.

The Arctic has gained strategic importance due to melting ice opening new maritime routes and access to hydrocarbons. This shift coincides with NATO reinforcing its northern flank following the accession of Finland and Sweden. Additionally, China is increasingly utilizing the Northern Sea Route as part of its ‘Ice Silk Road’ strategy to facilitate trade and bypass traditional maritime chokepoints.
