Putin expresses interest in Japan cooperation while citing militarization concerns
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed interest in cooperating with Japan in economic, environmental, and joint research sectors, provided current difficulties are overcome. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin stated that while Russia remains interested in cooperation, he holds concerns regarding Japan’s “militarization” plans.
Putin claimed that Russia’s stance toward Japan has not changed, suggesting instead that Japan’s own position has shifted. In response, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara rejected the assertion that Japanese sanctions or protests are the cause of deteriorating bilateral relations. Kihara emphasized that the current strained relationship is a direct consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Analysts suggest Putin’s comments may be an attempt to stabilize relations following recent tensions, noting that Russia may seek to maintain cooperation in energy sectors to avoid excessive strategic dependence on China.
