Putin orders strategy to destabilize NATO and EU by 2026
Reports from The New York Times and Western intelligence officials indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a strategic campaign to destroy NATO and the European Union from within by 2026. This strategy involves testing the resolve of the alliance through cyberattacks, sabotage, or limited military incursions on the eastern flank.
A primary focus of this destabilization effort is Moldova. Intelligence assessments suggest that while conquering Ukraine remains Russia's top priority, establishing political control over Moldova is a close second. Moscow reportedly aims to seize southern Ukraine to create a land corridor connecting Russia to the breakaway region of Transnistria, which would place Moldova in a highly vulnerable position.
Evidence of active interference includes the GRU organizing training for Moldovan citizens in Serbia, Bosnia, and near Moscow to teach tactics for organizing riots, using explosives, and operating drones. Additionally, a massive vote-buying operation led by businessman Ilan Șor, allegedly under the control of Russian official Sergey Kiriyenko, has been identified. This network reportedly involved over 150,000 people and included significant payments to activists and religious figures. Further reports indicate that Russian hackers breached Moldova's Central Electoral Commission during recent political cycles.
