US envoys Witkoff and Kushner hold peace talks in Moscow and Kyiv

US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have conducted a high-stakes diplomatic mission to Moscow and Kyiv to facilitate peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. On Saturday, the envoys met with Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin for over three hours. During this meeting, the envoys reportedly presented several ideas for a potential settlement. Putin described the talks as “highly useful” and “constructive,” though no formal agreement was reached. To facilitate the envoys' movement, Putin ordered a 72-hour cessation of aerial attacks on Kyiv.

On Sunday, the delegation traveled to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting included discussions on security guarantees and the possibility of a “just peace.” National security advisers from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany also joined the discussions in Kyiv. While Zelenskyy expressed optimism regarding the US involvement, he maintained that complex territorial issues must be resolved at the level of heads of state.

Despite the diplomatic efforts and the temporary ceasefire for the capital cities, both Russia and Ukraine reported continued military strikes against each other's territories during the weekend.
