Putin proposes trilateral summit with Trump and Xi in China

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a trilateral summit with U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The meeting is tentatively planned for November 2026 on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China.

Russian presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov stated that the possibility of the meeting was discussed during an encounter between Putin and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Ushakov noted that none of the three capitals have rejected the idea and that Chinese hosts are making arrangements to include the meeting in the official agenda if circumstances allow.

President Trump has expressed readiness to participate, though he indicated the primary focus would be on nuclear disarmament rather than direct negotiations regarding the Ukraine conflict. While the Kremlin and U.S. officials have signaled openness, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated it currently has no information regarding such a meeting, and no formal agreement or specific agenda has been finalized.

Separately, President Zelenskyy has expressed a willingness to accept a freeze of current frontlines as a minimum requirement for peace, provided Ukraine receives security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5.
