Putin rejects US peace proposal for Ukraine as regional tensions rise
Diplomatic efforts to broker peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict have stalled following a visit to Moscow by US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Despite reportedly carrying a peace proposal, the envoys were unable to secure an agreement, as Vladimir Putin rejected the overtures and maintained his objective of achieving conquest. Shortly after the envoys departed, Russia resumed heavy drone and missile strikes against Kyiv.
Simultaneously, tensions have escalated in Southwest Asia. Following US strikes on Iranian oil tankers, Iran responded by firing ballistic anti-ship missiles at a US aircraft carrier and destroyer in the Gulf of Oman. While some financial interests in London and the US advocate for intensified economic pressure on Iran, concerns remain regarding the US military capacity and international support required to sustain prolonged conflict. Within the US, Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly conducted a purge of personnel suspected of opposing current policies or leaking information regarding potential weapons shortages.
