Putin resists U.S. diplomatic pressure amid Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin is maintaining his military course in Ukraine despite recent diplomatic warnings from the United States. During a highly secretive visit to Moscow, CIA Director John Ratcliffe met with top Russian intelligence officials, including the heads of the FSB and the Foreign Intelligence Service, to deliver a pessimistic assessment of Russia’s military and economic situation and to urge a return to negotiations.

However, the Kremlin appears unswayed. Putin reportedly believes that U.S. involvement in Iran has limited Washington’s capacity to intervene effectively, providing Russia more room to exert pressure on Ukraine and Europe. Moscow’s strategy relies on the belief that Ukraine faces more immediate vulnerabilities, specifically regarding dwindling soldier reserves, funding shortages, and inadequate air defense against ballistic missiles.

While Russia faces internal economic pressures and drone strikes on its own infrastructure, the Kremlin is betting on long-term attrition. Moscow is reportedly seeking additional missile capabilities from North Korea and is preparing for a renewed intensive military campaign this winter targeting Ukrainian political and military infrastructure.
