Putin sets new deadline for Donbas capture amid failed military objectives

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) report that Russian President Vladimir Putin has set 15 different deadlines for the full capture of the Donbas region since the start of the invasion, none of which have been met by the Russian General Staff.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Putin has issued a new order for the military to seize the entire Donetsk region by December 31. However, ISW analysts suggest these deadlines are unrealistic and reflect a potential misunderstanding of the actual battlefield situation. Current Russian control in the Donetsk region is estimated at approximately 79.89%.

Despite increased local attacks, the Russian offensive has seen significant stagnation. Recent data indicates extremely slow progress, with some areas seeing advances of only 15 to 70 meters per day. Analysts suggest that given current rates, it is unlikely Russia will achieve full control of the Donbas by the end of 2026, and perhaps not at all.
