Putin targets full Donbas conquest within 18 months
At the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he expects the complete conquest of the Ukrainian Donbas region within 18 months. He suggested this timeline could be shortened due to the current advance of Russian troops. According to Russian claims, approximately 11 percent of the Donbas region remains under Ukrainian control.
Putin criticized the Ukrainian leadership, questioning the utility of sacrificing lives and security to hold onto territories that he characterized as inevitable losses.
Despite these assertions, reports from the front lines indicate a more complex situation. In several sectors, the frontline has remained largely unchanged for months. Furthermore, Ukrainian forces have recently made territorial gains in the Donetsk region near Lyman, and Russian troops remain over ten kilometers away from the fortified cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
