Putin warns of nuclear risks as Trump considers prisoner-for-sanctions plan

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued warnings regarding nuclear weapons during the Valdai Discussion Club, stating that if a weapon is on the stage, it must eventually be fired. He noted there are no guarantees that nuclear powers will not resort to their arsenals and emphasized that while Russia has no intention of attacking Europe in the foreseeable future, it will respond if faced with aggression.

Putin also addressed rising tensions in the Kaliningrad region, describing NATO military exercises near the exclave as provocations. He characterized Moscow's communications to NATO regarding the area as a response to intimidation.

Separately, the Trump administration is reportedly considering a Cold War-era diplomatic strategy to break the deadlock with Moscow. The proposed initiative involves the United States requesting the release of political prisoners—including dissidents, journalists, and American citizens—in exchange for the gradual easing of certain economic sanctions. While the plan aims to potentially open doors for trade, it has faced warnings from Ukraine and rejection from Moscow.
