Military experts and former commanders are analyzing shifts in Russian strategy and the personal motivations of Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine.
Ukrainian veteran Yevhen Dykiy suggests that Putin has redefined victory. According to Dykiy, the Kremlin's current strategy has moved beyond frontline combat to focus on two main pillars: the systematic destruction of Ukrainian civilian infrastructure—including power plants, hospitals, and logistics hubs—and the exploitation of political instability within Western nations to erode support for Kyiv. This approach aims to use psychological pressure and constant air raid alerts to force territorial concessions or surrender.
Separately, retired GROM commander Roman Polko stated that Putin is currently acting to save his own life, arguing that the Russian leader has committed too deeply to the conflict to retreat without facing accountability. Polko noted that despite the war being intended as a short campaign, Russia has entered its fifth year facing massive economic and human losses, which he believes will eventually lead to domestic repercussions for the Russian leadership.
