Putumayo ex-combatants face uncertainty after ZUT closure announcement

Ex-combatants in the Valle del Guamuez municipality of Putumayo are facing uncertainty following the Colombian government's decision to close the Temporary Location Zone (ZUT). The zone was established as part of peace agreements between the government and the Coordinadora Nacional Ejército Bolivariano to facilitate the transition to civilian life.

The government has announced that the ZUT will cease operations on September 30, 2026. While some former combatants have chosen to leave the area, others remain and are requesting security guarantees and clarity regarding their reincorporation process. Those staying emphasize their commitment to remaining away from weapons and seek continued support from relevant state entities.

There are significant concerns regarding the safety of these individuals, as leaving the protected zone without a clear transition plan could expose them to risks in a region where armed groups are still active. Approximately one hundred members had entered the process on June 18 after surrendering their weapons and uniforms.
