Puyo River cleanup removes 700kg of waste in Ecuadorian Amazon

More than 100 participants, including students, firefighters, military personnel, and community members, participated in a massive cleanup of the Puyo River in the Ecuadorian Amazon. During the four-hour event, organizers removed 700 kilograms of waste, such as bottles and plastics, from the riverbanks.

The initiative was part of the #EUBeachCleanup campaign, a global effort led by the European Union to promote the cleaning of beaches, rivers, and lakes. This marked the first time the campaign has been implemented in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Jekaterina Doródnova, the European Union Ambassador to Ecuador, emphasized the importance of protecting this highly biodiverse region and called for better waste management to prevent debris from entering waterways.
