PwC study: Hungarian back-to-school spending averages 107,539 HUF

A recent PwC study reveals that back-to-school shopping remains one of the largest annual expenses for Hungarian families. On average, a household spends approximately 107,539 HUF on school preparations, which breaks down to an average of 66,928 HUF per child.

Spending patterns show that 76.1% of families with school-aged children purchase stationery, while 56.9% buy clothing and sports equipment. Although technological devices represent a smaller percentage of families' shopping lists, they constitute the largest portion of total expenditure. For university students, the average cost per school year is approximately 193,251 HUF.

Digitalization is increasingly evident in household spending. Currently, 75.5% of students own a mobile phone, 61.9% own a laptop, and 45.1% own a tablet. Artificial intelligence has also become part of the educational toolkit; 15% of households pay for AI services, while 48.6% use free versions, primarily for information retrieval and explaining course material.

Most purchasing activity is concentrated in August, with 61.1% of families shopping during that month. While 68% of families utilize online channels—primarily driven by lower prices—32% still shop exclusively in physical stores.
