Pyeongtaek City and Samsung Electronics to manage PFAS in semiconductor wastewater

Pyeongtaek City and Samsung Electronics have agreed to collaborate on establishing a proactive management system for trace pollutants, specifically perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), found in wastewater from the Samsung Electronics Pyeongtaek Campus.

While current discharge levels at the Godeok industrial complex remain within 10% to 30% of legal limits, public concern regarding the environmental and health impacts of these “forever chemicals” has increased. Recent data indicates that blood PFAS concentrations in South Korean adolescents are significantly higher than those in American adolescents, with PFOA levels approximately twice as high.

The partnership aims to monitor the water quality of surrounding rivers and lakes, such as the Seojeongri Stream and Pyeongtaek Lake, and to transparently share information with citizens. Pyeongtaek City also plans to recommend the establishment of more detailed management manuals and legal standards for trace pollutants to relevant government ministries.
