Pyeongtaek City Council prioritizes fiscal oversight of major projects
Marking 100 days since the opening of its 10th term, the Pyeongtaek City Council, led by Chairman Choi Jae-young, has prioritized fiscal responsibility and the oversight of large-scale development projects. Key early actions include the complete removal of the budget for overseas official training and the completion of the council's first administrative audit to inspect executive policies.
Chairman Choi emphasized the need for rigorous post-management of major projects, such as the Brain City Medical Complex and the construction of Ajou University Pyeongtaek Hospital. The council intends to evaluate not only the necessity of these projects but also the appropriateness of financial investment, long-term operational sustainability, and maintenance costs to prevent superficial achievements.
Addressing the local economy, the council highlighted the volatility of tax revenue linked to the semiconductor industry. While local income tax from Samsung Electronics is projected to surge from 0 KRW in 2024 to approximately 55 billion KRW in 2025, Choi warned against complacency. He advocated for mid-to-long-term financial planning to prepare for potential economic fluctuations and ensure stable regional development.
