Pyeongtaek Coast Guard cracks down on illegal activities in Sihwa Lake

The Pyeongtaek Coast Guard has identified 28 instances of illegal activity during a concentrated crackdown on the Sihwa Lake area. The violations include illegal fishing operations using leisure boats, unauthorized occupation of public waters, and unregistered water leisure businesses.

Since September, authorities have targeted these activities to mitigate safety risks, particularly as the autumn season increases leisure boat traffic. Illegal fishing gear installed in the area poses a significant danger, as it can snag boat propulsion systems and cause accidents.

Sihwa Lake has been a prohibited fishing zone since 1994, following compensation for fishing rights during the construction of the Sihwa Seawall. Despite this, some individuals continue to install illegal gear at night, particularly around the Hyeongdo area.

In a recent joint operation involving Ansan, Siheung, and Hwaseong cities, as well as the Korea Water Resources Corporation, the Coast Guard inspected leisure boat moorings and supported the removal of illegal fishing equipment. Authorities plan to continue intensive inspections and strengthen cooperation with local agencies to ensure maritime safety and order.
