Pyeongtaek hazardous materials warehouse fire triggers national mobilization
A large fire broke out at a hazardous materials warehouse in Cheongbuk-eup, Pyeongtaek, early on August 11. The facility, a one-story special logistics center, was authorized to store up to 12.55 million liters of hazardous materials, with approximately 1.91 million liters of flammable chemicals and various other substances stored in the affected building.
Fire authorities issued a national firefighting mobilization order at 3:39 a.m. as flames threatened to spread. The response was escalated to Level 2 before being downgraded to Level 1 at 5:16 a.m. as the blaze was brought under control. A total of 255 personnel and over 100 pieces of equipment, including support from neighboring provinces like Chungnam and Daejeon, were deployed to the scene.
No casualties or injuries have been reported. The fire spread to two of the seven buildings in the complex but was contained before further expansion. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook and Minister of the Interior and Safety Yun Ho-jung issued emergency orders to ensure resident safety, prevent chemical leaks, and manage environmental protection regarding wastewater. Authorities will investigate the cause of the fire once it is fully extinguished.
