Pylos to host commemorations for 199th anniversary of Battle of Navarino

The Municipality of Pylos-Nestor is organizing a four-day program of commemorative events to mark the 199th anniversary of the Battle of Navarino. The celebrations, scheduled from October 17 to October 20, aim to honor the historical significance of the naval battle that took place on October 20, 1827.

During the battle, allied fleets from Britain, France, and Russia defeated the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet in the Bay of Navarino. This victory served as a turning point in the Greek War of Independence and was decisive in the formation of the independent Greek state.

The program includes an exhibition titled ‘From Missolonghi to Navarino – From Sacrifice to Freedom’ at the Tsiklitiras house, as well as traditional music, dances, and concerts. The commemorations will culminate on October 20 with official ceremonies, parades, and wreath-laying at monuments, followed by a historical reenactment of the naval battle in the coastal zone of the city.
