Pyrenees National Park warns of high wildfire risk

The Pyrenees National Park has issued an alert regarding heightened wildfire risks driven by unprecedented drought conditions. Despite strict prohibitions, authorities have reported instances of illegal camping fires in protected areas, including a recent incident near Lake Gaube in Cauterets.

Extreme heat and dry vegetation have made the landscape highly susceptible to sparks, posing threats to wildlife, flora, and the safety of hikers and rescue teams. To combat these risks, management teams from the park and various national agencies, including the Gendarmerie and the French Biodiversity Agency, have increased field presence to educate visitors and enforce regulations.

Surveillance remains challenging due to high visitor numbers, particularly in areas like the Néouvielle National Nature Reserve, which sees tens of thousands of visitors annually on its most frequented trails.
