Pyrgos open market faces crisis as stalls drop from 200 to 85

Producers and merchants at the Pyrgos open market in Greece are reporting a severe economic crisis. Dionysios Drakopoulos, president of the Open Markets of Ilia Prefecture, describes the situation as ‘tragic,’ noting that consumer purchasing has dropped by more than 50%.

Rising production and commercial costs, combined with consumers seeking the lowest possible prices, have led to a significant contraction of the market. The number of stalls in the Pyrgos market has fallen from approximately 200 five years ago to just 85 today, with only about 40 permanent professionals remaining.
