Massive forest fires are raging in southwestern France and central Spain, prompting the evacuation of more than 300,000 people. In France, the blaze around the Gironde region has scorched roughly 42,000 hectares, while in Spain the fires near Ávila, Madrid and Toledo have burned an estimated 172,000 hectares.

The European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism has coordinated an emergency response that includes seven firefighting aircraft and four helicopters supplied by the Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden and Turkey, as well as additional assets from other member states. Turkey also sent two dedicated firefighting planes after a direct request from Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned that the fire has generated its own wind and formed a pyrocumulonimbus cloud, a storm‑like fire cloud that can create strong winds and lightning. President Emmanuel Macron thanked Turkey for its assistance, and Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the situation as “critical” as a new heat wave approaches.
