Q Manivannan granted UK visa extension to continue role as Green MSP

Scottish Green MSP Q Manivannan has been granted a graduate visa, allowing them to continue living and working in the United Kingdom. Originally from India, Manivannan was elected to the Scottish Parliament in May while holding a student visa.

The new three-year visa extends their residency until 2029, which is two years short of the full parliamentary term. Manivannan has indicated plans to apply for a global talent visa to secure their position further. While political opponents from the Reform and Conservative parties previously questioned the legality of Manivannan running for office without indefinite leave to remain, the Scottish Greens noted that all parties supported the legislation allowing immigrants to stand in elections.

Since their election, Manivannan has faced various controversies, including criticism regarding their background and past remarks made on a podcast concerning the description of rape. Manivannan has addressed these issues, stating they are focused on parliamentary work involving childcare access, fair work in arts and culture, and opposing AI hyperscale data centre applications.
