Qalyubia waste management system to undergo development

Egypt's Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, met with the Governor of Qalyubia, Hossam Abdel Fattah, to discuss developing an integrated waste management system for the governorate. The meeting focused on improving waste collection and transportation mechanisms to enhance cleanliness and public services across all cities and districts.

Discussions included reviewing the current status of waste infrastructure, including five intermediate stations designed to increase collection efficiency. The officials also reviewed the operations at the Khanka waste treatment facility, where the company Gaia Titan aims to increase operational capacity through further investments, particularly for the southern sector.

To ensure sustainability, Minister Awad directed the governorate to formalize contracts with local NGOs in villages to manage waste services and suggested extending permits for one year to facilitate better oversight. Additionally, she emphasized the need to prevent illegal waste dumping in canals and drains while increasing public awareness campaigns regarding environmental and health risks.
